Microsoft has stopped support for Internet Explorer 8, 9, and 10.

What is happening?

As of January 12th 2016 Microsoft stopped supporting Internet Explorer 8, 9 and 10. Users of these old browsers will no longer receive security updates, compatibility fixes and technical support. Only the latest version of Internet Explorer, IE11, will receive this support on Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 meaning that the old versions of the browser will be left with vulnerabilities in their security. Websites will no longer be developed to be compatible with old versions of the browser.

What are the potential risks of continuing to use an old version?

  • By not updating to Internet Explorer 11 your PC could potentially become vulnerable to attacks from viruses and malicious software which can be used to gain access to your PC and from there, your business data.
  • Cyber attackers are known to target vulnerabilities within Internet Explorer – by not updating to the latest version your PC could become a potential target.
  • Websites will no longer be developed to be compatible with old versions of the browser, meaning if you don’t update you could potentially experience performance issues when browsing websites.

How do I update to IE 11?

If your automatic updates are turned on then you most likely have already updated to IE 11 without knowing.
The easiest way for PC users to update is by automatic update.
If automatic updates are not switched on you can begin the update by:

  • Go to your PC’s control panel
  • Go to the Windows Update portion
  • Click Check for Updates

However, if your businesses IT is managed by an external IT management company then you will need to contact them to update to the latest version of Internet Explorer.
